Legal Research 101: Finding the Law for Everyday Life

Legal Research 101: Finding the Law for Everyday Life In-Person

Why do legal research? There are many scenarios in life where you'll need to do some type of legal research, including buying a house, changing your name, starting a business, and more. Legal issues may come up in areas of your study as well, such as looking up key cases in education, or laws of ethics in psychology. This workshop is designed to provide a broad overview of legal research and will include:

  • Key legal terms and the different types of law
  • Recommended sources for finding cases and statutes in the library databases and for free on the internet
  • Research tips & finding tools
  • Tips for further research (your local court library, county law library, etc).

Note: If you are a JD, paralegal, or MLS student and are seeking in-depth legal research support, please book a legal research consultation here: https://ncu.libcal.com/appointments

Librarians cannot provide legal advice, such as how to fill out forms, or which cases or statutes are suitable for your specific issue, however we are happy to show you where to find resources and provide recommendations for further assistance.
